The article looks back at Dr. Shan’s early interest in plant-based medicine, her training in pharmacology and physiology, the development of COLD-FX®, and the founding of PBG BioPharma in 2018.

One idea connects these different stages of her career: natural compounds can be studied, standardized, and developed with the same scientific discipline expected in modern pharmaceutical development.

At PBG BioPharma, this approach continues across the company’s work in phytochemical medicines, cannabinoid-based ingredients, medical cannabis, natural health products, and GMP manufacturing.
The interview also introduces PBG’s proprietary GenBioChem® Triple Fingerprinting Technology, which combines genetic, biological, and chemical fingerprinting to support the identity, quality, biological activity, and consistency of plant-derived ingredients and finished products.
For Dr. Shan, the work with ginseng, cannabinoids, and other phytochemicals is part of the same long-term scientific direction: understanding what nature provides, identifying and characterizing its active compounds, and developing them with greater consistency, quality control, and scientific evidence.
The article also touches on the realities of building a science-driven company in a rapidly changing cannabis industry, including regulatory complexity, market volatility, and the long timelines required for pharmaceutical development.
The title “Global Cannabis Samurai” reflects the perseverance, discipline, and long-term commitment that Dr. Shan believes are necessary when pioneering a young industry.
PBG BioPharma thanks Takuya Aiuchi and the Global Cannabis Samurai team for sharing Dr. Shan’s story and introducing PBG’s work to audiences in Japan and beyond.
